In addition, Paul occasionally serves as a commentator about investing, economics, business news, politics and motivational guidance. The latter is based on the wit and wisdom featured in his book about Notre Dame’s legendary sports chaplain, Rev. James Riehle, who aided four national championship football teams that triumphed despite facing powerful opponents.
Paul also earned a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration on finance at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University, where he was elected to two terms as president of the Carey Business School’s Finance Club.
In 2017, Paul served as a guest lecturer at the Michigan State University School of Journalism, where he earlier earned a master’s degree and was inducted into the Kappa Tau Alpha honor society for academic excellence and scholarship in journalism and mass communication. He also worked as a graduate assistant at the school and as a communications intern at the National Cancer Institute. His master’s degree thesis focused on how best to reach various demographic groups with potentially life-saving cancer information in Washington, D.C. While in graduate school, he served as an intern in the Capitol Bureau of WDIV-TV, the NBC station in Detroit, and at a news radio station in Michigan’s capital of Lansing.
Before earning his two graduate degrees, Paul received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he focused on political science, business and economics. He also served as a reporter and an editor at a student newspaper, as well as the host of a public radio program about how to prepare for careers in fields such as health care and engineering.
Paul has won many journalism awards, including several from the Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association, an APEX National Editorial award from the Newsletter Publishers Association, a “Journalist of the Year” Award from Phillips Business Information (now Access Intelligence) and others. Avocations include running, fitness, music and the arts. Paul also is active in his church and has been recognized by the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Catholic Charities.
